Why let your sign become invisible just because it
got dark? It might be hours until closing time but your customers
don't notice you in the high street because that otherwise great
sign doesn't show up too well under murky street lighting. Or use
the darkness to augment existing signage by adding some flashing
neon or LEDs which would otherwise be invisible during the day.
An illuminated sign gives your message extra presence
and makes it stand out during the hours of darkness when there are
precious few other distractions.
You could decide to illuminate the whole sign by
mounting it on a translucent light box, so that it is perfectly
readable in normal light during the day and then continues to be
readable after dusk when the internal illumination is switched on.
Or perhaps a combination sign might be more appropriate
on which just a part of the sign is illuminated, such as the company
name, to provide a "corporate presence" for passing trade
during the night, leaving other details in the dark.
Brightly coloured neon or LEDs can be used to make
up exciting signs to advertise your business and attract customers.
These are often placed in a front window to complement the main
sign above, the main sign being used during the day and the illuminated
sign through the night.
Or go for embedded neon, in which the neon is housed
within the 3D lettering of the main sign to provide a soft glow
during darkness. If translucent plastic lettering is used, the neon
lights the whole sign and the letters are illuminated from within.
Maybe you prefer the classically understated touch
of back-lit neon such as that achieved by using opaque lettering
(for example stainless steel). In this case the front of the lettering
remains in darkness but the neon casts a distinguished, soft glowing
relief on the back wall, still allowing the sign to be easily read.
